The Mellor Society Annual General Meeting…
…and‘The Great Mellor Quiz’(part 2)
This year the Society is again promoting ‘The Great Mellor Quiz’ to be held in conjunction with the AGM. The business of the Society comprising approval of previous minutes, reports, subscription rate, accounts and election of officers, together with the consideration of any business brought forward by the committee or membership will be dealt with followed by the quiz.
If any member wishes to bring forward any business or serve on the committee please contact The Chair or Hon Secretary before the end of February.
Refreshments will be available during the evening.
The event will be held at Mellor Primary School commencing at 7:00 pm on Thursday 26th March 2015.
Last years event proved this programme to be both interesting and enjoyable for those attending as well as increasing knowledge of our village and local area.
So please get together with your friends and neighbours and enter a team (of up to 6 people).
Each team is charged £5 to enter with all the proceeds going to the ‘Mellor March’ supporting cancer charities. Entry forms are available from Tim Lowe, 499 5935.
The Mellor March
The Mellor March will take place this year on Sunday 3rd May.
The walk supports cancer charities and has now raised over £150,000. It is a family event and as the route is circular walkers can select a distance that suits them and head for home at any stage. The bulk of walkers leave from the Royal Oak from 10.00am onwards. Enjoy beautiful scenery and good company while supporting a good cause.

Mellor Primary School
Building for the future
In 2011 when the school became an Academy it set about preparing for the future. The plan included finding the necessary funds for both extending the school facilities and restructuring existing spaces. The school employed the services of Sarah Wigglesworth, an award winning architect. Sarah’s brief to her team was to create a learning space that would sit in the environment using a range of organic materials. The resulting design will provide the school with a larger hall, better toilet facilities, new outdoor resources area, a covered outdoor space, new library, a room for small focus group work, music tuition or 1:1 support, a flexible community and learning space, a more effective admin room and a new classroom seated in the natural environment.
Alongside this, the feature wall at the end of the classroom, known as the habitat wall, will attract birds, bats and insects. The aim behind this extensive project is to provide a school with an excellent facility to enhance teaching and learning as well as enable it to be sustainable for the future.

Thursday April 9th: ‘Garden Birds of Spring and Summer’ a talk by David Tideswell , who entertained us hugely a couple of years ago. 7.30 pm in the Parish Centre.

We are delighted that our keynote speaker will again be Elizabeth Wall, who gave us a really inspiring and entertaining presentation last year. Her new talk is entitled ‘Layers and Other Chickens’. Lizzie will also be leading a workshop. Anne Morrell, formerly Professor of Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University, world-wide expert and author of many best -selling books on embroidery will lead a handling workshop on Indian textile, including many antique and irreplaceable items. The third workshop, led by Meg Barley, will be an introduction to patchwork piecing using freezer paper, a technique devised by Ruth McDowell. An impromptu evening of poetry and cartoons by the poet and BBC presenter Ian McMillan and his cartoonist friend Tony Husband . Tickets £15 Adult and £7.50 Child (with 1 child aged 10-16 per adult). Thursday May 14th: ‘Clouds, Thunderstorms and Climate’ 7.30pm in the Parish Centre. A talk by local scientist Dr. Clive Saunders, atmospheric physicist and former researcher in the University of Manchester. Tickets are £7.50. Friends’ booking opens Monday April 6th. Mellor & Townscliffe Golf Club
Good news for Mellor & Townscliffe Golf Club. Sport England have issued the following Press Release:
Mellor & Townscliffe Golf Club awarded £52,755 of funding from Sport England
Mellor & Townscliffe Golf Club is among 148 local sports projects to secure a share of £10 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.
The club will receive £52,755 of National Lottery funding to refurbish the clubhouse and provide access to the premises, which celebrated its centenary in 1994. The club is an important player within the local community, but is under-utilised and it is hoped the repair of the access road and car park will encourage members and visitors from the local community to make full use of Mellor and Townscliffe.
The improved access will also provide a safe highway for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, as well as improving access to the local scout camp. Delivering the project will ensure that the club can maintain, nurture and develop our junior development programmes and also formalise and improve its work to attract more 18 – 40 year olds.
The club is keen to create opportunities for all members of the community to access the course and clubhouse.
Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “The Inspired Facilities Fund has had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country. Since 2011, we’ve invested £94 million into more than 1,800 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform non-sporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs. “It’s great to see Mellor & Townscliffe Golf Club join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund.”
Past Club President, Graham Davenport said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our premises and access to the clubhouse to match the quality of our course. It is the cornerstone of our strategy to have an outstanding club as part of the 2012 Olympics’ legacy.”
The club had a close relationship with our long standing but recently retired MP, Andrew Stunnell who supported this project. Mr Stunnell said: “Thank you for notifying me of the lottery funding the golf club has secured to carry out an array of work on the access road, top car park, disabled toilet and the rendering and refurbishment of one of your rooms. This is excellent news. Please pass on my congratulations to everyone involved at the club.”

Revealing Oldknow’s Legacy: Mellor Mill and the Peak Forest Canal in Marple
The Marple Lime Kilns
An element of the, Heritage Lottery Funded, Revealing Olknow’s Legacy project is to investigate the future feasibility of opening up to public viewing a section of the Marple Lime Kilns. This well hidden Industrial Heritage gem is reached via Lime Kiln Lane. The lane is off Strines Road opposite the recreation ground in Marple.
The Lime Kilns were built by Samuel Oldknow to burn limestone quarried in Dove Holes Derbyshire and transported by the Peak Forest Canal to Marple. After burning, the processed lime was transported by tramway, road and canal to be used for spreading on the fields, as a variety of building materials and other manufacturing processes.
Sadly the Marple Lime Kilns fell into disrepair and were in such a dangerous state that in the 1970’s it was decided to brick up the entrances and fill the limestone hoppers to prevent further access.
As part of the project, which also includes Mellor Mill and the Grand Marple Aquaduct, the Lime Kilns will undergo a structural survey and some investigative Community Archaeological Digs. These digs will inform the team as to what may be possible with the help of other grants in the future. The first of these two week digs will take place in October 2015 to be followed by a further 2 weeks in 2016 and 2017. Norman Redhead, Greater Manchester County Archaeologist, is the Chair of the group responsible for this aspect of the project. The Community Digs will be run by The Centre for Applied Archaeology (CfAA) based at Salford University.
The Community Dig will give the general public, schools and colleges an opportunity to discover the excitement of revealing yet more of our rich local Industrial Heritage.

There has been a lot of work carried out at Mellor Mill over the winter months to prepare it for the start of the “digging season”. Many of the spoil heaps have been moved, an area prepared for the delivery of a welfare cabin, equipment store and toilets. Better site access has been created. Volunteers will recommence excavating in February. There will be a, two week, Community Dig taking place at the end of March. Marple Grand Aquaduct
The work at the Aquaduct has been progressing at a pace. The arboricultural work is largely completed, contractors have been abseiling down the sides to repoint large areas of the masonry and pathways and viewing points are being created. With Health and Safety in mind there is a proposal to install iron railings to the “offside” of the Aquaduct and information about that is available upstairs at Marple Library.
Even if you don’t feel you can offer some time volunteering at our sites it is well worth a visit to see what this great project is doing to bring our local Industrial Heritage to life.
Film on the Hill
A very brief explanation of the ‘On the Hill’ title.
Over the last few years some fairly resourceful people have been involved in the Church fete. It was decided by one of them that having put up so many tents for the afternoon fete, it was a pity not to utilise them for an evening event. It was decided to get some bands on the field to play in the evening with pizza and beer, etc. available. The name for the evening event was ‘Bands on the Hill’.
When Guy Nicholls thought of starting a local theatre group, he decided it would be a good idea to call it ‘Theatre on the Hill’. This, hopefully, will lead to putting ‘the Hill’ very much on the map for entertainment events.
Guy said he would like many other events to take place such as ‘Music on the Hill’, ‘Festival on the Hill’, ‘Opera on the Hill’. The possibilities are endless.
Another current idea is ‘Film on the Hill’. The idea is to show three or four a year. This, however, is an idea in progress.
The local pubs (at the bottom of the hill) do seem to benefit from these events so it is hoped for the whole ’On the Hill’ venue to build into something notable and which will be of benefit to the community.
